When we had our A/C replaced a few years ago, the 4" filter and return was wider than the old one which had a 1" filter. This kept us from being able to open the door to our laundry/mud room fully, and made getting things through the door difficult. When I saw this, I realized I can regain those precious 3" and have a fully working door again. I don't know why our A/C technicians didn't recommend this in the first place.
