Gabbeh carpets originate from Farsi province in southwestern Iran and are made by Ghashghai nomads. Traditionally crafted with handmade wool in the pile and warp, as well as plant dyes, Gabbeh rugs are notable for their thickness; they can reach up to 2.5cm. Widely renowned, these Persian carpets have become a symbol of Iranian culture.
The patterns of the carpet are of a simple type with only a few elements of decorative, mostly rectangular objects containing animals. During the last decades, the weavers have had to meet the demands of the west and have therefore, resorted to using large light fields with chary pattering in the Gabbeh carpets.
